The 1928 John Staub-designed house is the former home of Houston philanthropist and collector Ima Hogg. In 1957 she donated her home and collections to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and in 1966 Bayou Bend opened to the public. Bayou Bend was marked with a Texas Historical Commission marker in 1973, listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and named an official city landmark by the City of Houston in 1999.
Today, nearly 2,600 objects are installed in 28 period-room settings which showcase the evolution of American taste from the Colonial through the Victorian eras, including furnishings, paintings, silver, ceramics, and glass. Visitors can tour the house and stroll the 14 acres of beautiful gardens and surrounding woodlands. Miss Hogg's dream was that "Bayou Bend may serve as a bridge to bring us closer to the heart of an American heritage which unites us."
